An entry for the Blogging from A to Z Challenge in April:
Have you obsessed about your hair this past year? With beauty salons and barber shops closed? And your favorite hair dresser or barber out of work?
Of course, there were bigger things to be concerned about, but I’ve talked to a lot of people who did obsess about their hair. What would they look like when this is over?
When I saw that my ever-present pixie cut was growing out into a shaggy-dog style, I decided now’s the time to try to grow it long. I’ve made it to almost ear-lobe length. That’s long for me.
What is your hair story for the last year? Any thing drastic? One friend shaved his head. Another dyed her hair purple.
Me? I’m just trying to get used to having more than three inches of hair on my head.

It’s been harder on my husband than me. He’s used to having his hair short, and since he still works, having shaggy curls isn’t for him. He was due for a cut this week, but now that we are on stay-at-home orders again, it’ll be another month. Good luck getting used to longer hair.

It must be tempting to put the kitchen scissors to work!

Early on in the pandemic, as my hair lengthened, I decided not to cut it for a while. Nothing worse than the process of growing out ones bangs–last done as a 9th grader. So out it grew, I returned to my default style of many years, clipping the sides back with barrettes. Did it for about a year, long enough to make a ponytail or braid. Then, as it became clear that around here at least we weren’t likely to be faced with a full lockdown, I got it cut off, back to my usual shortish hair, about 6 weeks ago now. Its nice to not have to do anything other than a quick comb. And I’m also recognizing that I’m coming up on due for another haircut–already. I’d already been grey without coloring for many years, so this wasn’t something I had to deal with. Cheers!

The growing out is awful. That’s why I’m hesitant to cut mine off again until I’m very sure I want to. My hair is yuk dishwater brown with a gray sprinkling so I still do highlights. Such fun!

My husband has taken to cutting his own hair! I’m not brave enough to do something like that! Early on, when the salons opened, I got my hair cut 2 different times. Then the governor said that no one could receive any type of hair service without a mask. Well – I can’t wear one – so that left me to grow my hair out (not because I wanted to!) I found I could recently put it in a pony tail! Haven’t done that since the 70’s! But I found a stylist who could help me out. She respects that not everyone can wear a mask and she cut my hair. She actually “gets” my hair – and, even though it was the first time we met, she gave me the perfect cut. Now my hair is out of my eyes (it was getting dangerously long and obstructive to my vision!) and I can see again!
I am enjoying your little daily stories!

Thanks for reading my stories! A pony tail. Wow! I’ve never ever had hair long enough for that. So great you found an understanding hairdresser. Helps our sanity in stressful times.

I got frustrated because I couldn’t see to cut the back.

I had to go 12 weeks without a haircut or color and I was shocked at how my hair affected my mood and self-confidence!! Our salons are now open and I double mask when I go.

I know!! Bad hair days are real. I’m glad you can go to a salon again. Makes a huge difference in our moods which we definitely need after this past year.
