Ten years ago this month, the completed copies of Caring Lessons: A Nursing Professor’s Journey of Faith and Self arrived in Chicago. I began the writing in 2000, after retiring as professor emerita of nursing from Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL. After many revisions, I finished it, finally, around 2008. Then the publishing process took until September of 2010.

You can still order copies of Caring Lessons from me. I have sold or given away (donated) the first thousand. But there’s a few left from the boxes I purchased after that. Caring Lessons tells the story of how one nurse lived out her career, from nurse aid to professor emerita and from diploma in nursing to PhD. Much has happened in the last few years. In 2016 Marv and I moved from Chicago to South Dakota to be near our daughter and her family, he passed away in 2018 from lung cancer, and, at his urging, I’m at work now writing a memoir about our experience from his diagnosis to his death.

Looking back to the arrival of Caring Lessons, this is my account of that exciting day:

I got the call from Con-way in west Chicago around noon today. The office buzzes us through a security gate.

Marv unloads while I play sidewalk superintendent.

All 720 pounds unloaded. I can now pose for a picture…

The boxes have my name on them. They must be copies of MY book!

We are home. Marv gets help from our always cheerful PM doorman.

So where does one store books in a city condo? The bathtub…

and the guest half-bath.

Now Caring Lessons has come full circle, back to my study where, at my computer, it has survived many iterations.
