A few weeks ago I was pleasantly surprised to be contacted by podcasters Wynne Leon and Dr. Victoria Atkinson and asked if I would participate in their podcast. I believe they found me through my online presence, either this blog or a comment I’d made on another blog. Fast forward a few weeks and today that podcast went live.
You may listen here or at the end of this post.
Before our conversation, they had sent a list of questions they’d like to ask. It was apparent they’d already read my book, Marv Taking Charge. So I had time to respond if I wanted any changes and to think about what I’d like listeners to know. I patterned my thinking along the lines of the book talk I’d already prepared and presented a few times. Marv had wanted people to know that if they got an almost universally scary cancer diagnosis, they can first consider their priorities, then they can choose to refuse treatment if that’s what they want in their situation. After making that decision, they can choose to live intentionally with the time they have left, and they can choose to die at home if they wish, the latter possible with all support systems in place. Especially hospice.
Our experience, then, with how we dealt with Marv’s cancer, aligned with the mission of Sharing the Heart of the Matter
After my teasers lately about this podcast coming up, I hope you grab your coffee or tea and spend about a half hour walking along with our story. Note that when I said “hospitalist” in the podcast, I meant to say palliative care specialist! Click on the following link, then on the arrow to play

Do you have Mary Reed and Fred on your list? A brief note to Fred should be interesting. I’m going to be bringing him the copy of your book Sunday. I simply haven’t been up that way since I received it. I have let him know that I have it.

No, I don’t. And now my blog site is under construction so it’s a mess until I figure it out.

I really enjoyed listening to the podcast, Lois. Lots of good stuff in there, and I am so glad that the message of patients rights, autonomy and choice making… WHAT MATTERS TO YOU? Is getting out there. Well done!
