Life at 82: W is for Whack

Due to my hyper chai reaction resulting in lots of lost sleep, followed by the inevitable somnolent crash, I and my body were out of WHACK yesterday. One definition is: If something is out of whack, it is not working properly, often because its natural balance has been upset.

That fit my situation. My body does not like a rampant deviation in night/day schedule. It rebels!

Looking up a definition of my kind of “out of whack” led me to several funny synonyms: beat up, glitched, imperfect, in need of repair, in poor condition, in smithereens, kaput, loused up, messed up, mucked up, no-go, on the blink, on the fritz, out of action, out of kilter, screwed up, unsound.

Those all fit me! Feel free to use any of them the next time you feel out of whack. Or anything that makes you feel in need of repair.

And if you do feel on the fritz, be good to yourself, maybe call a friend or snuggle up and read. That’s what I did. Friend chats and books are always comforting companions for your days off from life!

We’re winding up the A to Z Blogging in April Challenge already. This surely makes the month scoot along. X, Y, and Z yet. Thanks for following along! Stay tuned. Let’s see — X is for ?????

The synonyms for “whack” brought back memories. Whenever something was out of whack for my mother she would say that whatever it was had “gone kaput.” Hope you’re back in whack now.

Another way to think of “whack:” When I continued my education in my forties, I entered the (Alfred) Adler Graduate School. In the first class, we were introduced to this word as the instructor told us that at Adler, we were encouraged to support our fellow students, show Adlerian “Social Interest,” and when unsure, just “take a whack at it.” What a supportive educational environment that turned out to be with all of us whacking away, doing our best.

There is an Adler Graduate School in Chicago. I attended one here in Minnesota. Yes. All of life is about taking a whack at what you want to accomplish. I remember a song (50’s, 60’s?) Called “Give it a go.” I can’t find it on google. “Sometimes your little caboose, can use an extra boost…” and “…you tell your doubts I’m kicking you out, so go and take a walk!” It was one of those hokey songs around the same time as “High Hopes.” Songs that perked me up.

      2. My grad class at U of I sat in on a family therapy session at Adler. I’d forgotten about that. / Perky songs for sure. My caboose could stand a boost! I remember High Hopes with its swingy tune. Fun memories! Thanks!
