C is for Chicago

When I missed my connection and stayed overnight at O’Hare a few nights ago, all I could see of Chicago from my hotel room was this haze of clouds. It was almost enough to soothe my lonesome mind.

Living in the Chicago area for fifty years does that to you. I imagine you have some places lodged in your mind, too.

I’m happy Marv and I moved from our downtown condo to South Dakota to be near our daughter and her family before he became ill and passed away. It was good to be settled in and not have to resettle alone.

I want to assure you, at an older age, that there is still lots of life after the death of one’s spouse. Life is different but doable, along with a big dollop of faith.

  1. I only lived in Chicago for 9 years, but I certainly enjoyed my time in the city. Your photo of the clouds obscuring downtown was evocative. Four of us carpooled to medschool from Hyde Park to Rush. On those cloudy days, all the skyscrapers disappeared, and we decided it was due to the buildings taken out for cleaning. Utter fantasy of course, but entertaining.
I am glad that your move to SD has worked well for you–who knew?

    1. Funny! I lived my last eleven years in one of those Loop high-rises that would disappear during a fog. And yes, who knew?! I did grad school at UIC-Medical Center so got off the train by Rush. Loved the vibes! So we both hung out in the same area at one time.

  2. I grew up in Illinois, but all the way on the other end of the state. It was a sevenihour drive to get to Chicago. In my 40 years in Illinois, I went there less than a dozen times. I was always the small-town farm boy.

Today, I still live in a small town, but it is in Vietnam now.
